There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important. The manager’s job is to plan, organize and coordinate. The leader’s job is to inspire and motivate.
Haven’t we heard this line enough that a person doesn’t leave a job, he leaves his boss. Why do we keep hearing this? Let me tell you some real-life experiences.
Situation: There is a big partnership going to be announced between two companies and the team is briefed in the last few days that we need to create a 3-5 year broad plan on what we are going to achieve with this partnership.
Stage 1: Hyper ventilation by the team…ab kya kare? Itni jaldi kaise hoga? How will we put this together in such a short time.
Stage 2: (From a manager or boss perspective)
Arre relax guys…kuch sochte hai…yaar I’m blank….oh I have an idea….let’s take 4-5 old presentations and pick up points from there! All this in a matter of 90 seconds. So what’s the next step…Team member 1 – you do this, team member 2 – you do that etc….and then the best part…send it to me and I will send it to the Chairman. Just then one enthu cutlet will have the guts to ask “what about your inputs?”. Pat comes the answer…you don’t bother about that. I have made many such presentations…I know this at the back of my hand.
Stage 2: (From a leader perspective)
Ok guys relax…ab karna toh hai…either we waste time in cribbing and complaining or sit together and think of ideas of how we can break this down and plan the execution in a timely manner. Let’s do some brainstorming and hear everyone’s thoughts/suggestions/ideas. Let’s do something different. I’m sure if we collaborate and ideate, we will have a rocking presentation…what say?
See the difference? A manager or boss will always demand results whereas a leader will inspire and give guidance.
Your team will always look up to you, believe in you and go that extra mile for you….depends on the way you behave with them…bossgiri dikhana is not necessary.
