I recently left my job to start as a freelance brand and content marketing consultant. Sounds fancy right? It’s a cool title with the same work….so what’s the difference? I get to work on different kinds of projects with different organizations across different sectors. A huge change from the routine work that you do with one company.
The obvious question is how does it feel to be on the other side? From briefing agencies on various aspects, I am now taking downloads from different clients on their thought process, and I thought wow the way my boss had taught me many years ago on how to write a brief for the agency, I will be getting very comprehensive and professional briefs from clients.
But my bubble burst from the very first client who left me a voice note and said…”bus yahi hai…samajh gaye na?” The other one forwarded me multiple whatsapp messages saying this is what I want.
I thought to myself that if my colleagues or I would have done this many years back, my boss would just have a straight face, call us to his cabin, remove his glasses and say “Is this how you give a brief to an agency? My EA would have done a better job.”
But getting the brief is later; first it’s about business development. All these years you have heard oh you are so good at client relations, and in my head, I have already imagined what an easy peezy job it’s going to be for me to reach out to old contacts and get good projects.
Hahaha…not so easy buddy!! Remember receiving those typical BD mails in your mailbox that just go to trash without even opening them…ya I was one of them. And then of course the very famous line that you have earlier heard from your bosses and now you hear from your clients “Mazaa nahi aaya.”
I have just begun my journey and I’m sure a lot of you have too. Some days are really tough as you stare blankly and wonder if this is the right decision, and other days you are so busy that there is no time to think between calls, meetings and deadlines…difference is we get to work on our own terms, at our own pace and at our own time. Days feel longer and you have the option to do many other things that you love.
