I recently read about Nitin Kamath who put up a post about his health and how despite being so cautious about his habits and his fitness, he suffered a mild stroke. That raised the question in many people’s mind – he was so fit then how did he get a stroke?
We have all witnessed this in our personal life where a friend, family member, acquaintance, colleague or neighbour is either suffering or has suffered from a disease or a heart attack and sometimes has even passed away at a very young age. It is shocking and the first comment we make is arre but he/she was so fit…no bad habits…no smoking or drinking, not even chai/coffee then how could this happen.
That’s the point. While it matters that we all need to be fit, the question is are we well? Well does not mean the typical cold, cough and fever drill. We are talking about mental, emotional, financial, physical, intellectual, environmental and spiritual wellbeing.
Some say oh yes, we are perfectly fine…there are no problems, while some others will either blame it on work stress or boss, or family, wife, kids etc.
In the last couple of days, every office, every team is only talking about how it is important to eat healthy, exercise, have a work-life balance etc.
Imagine being in a team where you have a “papa ki pari” Ms. Sobo who has driver bhaaya picking and dropping her to work, and then we have this sweet little hardworking vibrant girl from Bhandup who barely has time to get ready and have her breakfast before leaving as she needs to catch the train and then taken an auto to reach office on time.
Now imagine both of them talking about health, fitness and wellness. The papa ki pari is talking about her morning routine – wakes up early morning (read 7.45 am) in her luxurious penthouse overlooking the Arabian Sea. She starts her day with a glass of organic kale juice, followed by a sunrise yoga session on her rooftop helipad (because who needs a regular yoga studio?).
Wondering why is she even working here? She wanted outside “experience” before taking over as the MD of papa’s business.
She then heads to an exclusive fitness club, where her personal trainer, Rocky, guides her through a high-intensity workout. The routine includes exercises like diamond-encrusted squats and Prada planks. And of course, the post-workout protein shake is infused with unicorn tears for that extra touch of magic. Not to miss the exotic breakfast of avocado toasts, quinoa bowls, and freshly squeezed orange juice.
Meanwhile, our little Bhandup girl works out on her way. After hitting the snooze button at 6.00 am for the third time, she quickly gets ready, has a staple breakfast of chai and paratha, prepared lovingly by her mom. No rooftop helipad here, just a balcony with drying laundry.
Beginning with a long jump in a crowded local train, she dodges fellow passengers to somehow manage a corner to stand and get some breeze near the door. The post workout drink of course is her “ghar ka saaf filter ka pani” and she is obviously tempted by the vada pav at the station.
You know what was interesting, they both were extremely happy in their lives. It’s important to have fun and enjoy little moments in your life without cribbing. Fitness doesn’t have to be boring, and wellness doesn't mean going to retreats. It’s all about mastering the art of being happy in whichever situation you are.
It’s a short life…can’t change the past, can’t predict the future so why be anxious? Live in the present! It’s your mindset that can keep you fit and well.
