Bhutan: A Journey into Tranquillity and Charm

It has been more than a decade since I visited the Land of the Thunder Dragon. A not-so-commonly visited place in those years, especially by us Indians, my brother and I decided to try one of the most unexplored and underrated places.

While there are no direct flights from Mumbai, we thought let’s say hello to Howrah Bridge and the Puchkaas before we embark on a week-long expedition where we were going to venture into a realm where time seemed to slow down, and serenity permeated the air. From savoring unique culinary delights to exploring ancient monasteries, each day brought forth a kaleidoscope of experiences that etched memories to last a lifetime.

After a heavy meal of Kathi rolls and dessert at Flurry’s, we had to catch a 4 am flight to Paro in a very cute looking aircraft of Druk Air.

As the plane descended into Paro, the picturesque valley welcomed me with a panorama of green landscapes and traditional Bhutanese architecture. The first taste of Bhutanese hospitality was served with a hot bowl of Ema Datshi, a fiery chilli and cheese concoction that set the tone for my culinary adventure. The absence of traffic signals on the roads was a refreshing change, allowing a seamless transition into the calm rhythm of Bhutanese life.

Thimphu and Punakha, the heartbeats of Bhutan, each had a story to tell. In Thimphu, the capital, the streets buzzed with a unique blend of tradition and modernity. A stroll through the weekend market revealed vibrant colors, as locals in their traditional attire traded goods. Punakha, with its majestic dzongs and lush landscapes, offered a serene escape. The absence of honking horns and the presence of courteous locals made these cities a haven of peace.

Venturing into Bhutan's monasteries felt like stepping into a different dimension. The Taktsang Monastery, perched precariously on a cliff, offered breathtaking views and a sense of spiritual tranquillity. Conversations with the monks revealed their dedication to a simple, contemplative life.

The day took an adventurous turn with a trek to the iconic Tiger's Nest. It clearly made me realize the importance of fitness and healthy lifestyle when I saw a 65-year-old Japanese lady stride up that narrow path with a bottle of water and a stick, while I was here panting, catching a breath, pretending to take some pictures every five minutes as I needed a break.

As days passed, the uniqueness of the country became apparent. I soon realized that the absence of a traffic signal was not just a traffic strategy but a metaphor for a lifestyle devoid of unnecessary haste. The harmonious coexistence of traditional culture and modernity, the serene landscapes, and the genuine smiles and warmth of the locals painted a picture of a nation content in simplicity. No wonder they have a Gross National Happiness Index!

To anyone seeking a unique travel experience, Bhutan beckons with open arms. Beyond the tourist spots lies a country rich in culture, kindness, and an unparalleled sense of calm.
